Mount Athos (also known as the Holy Mountain) is a self-governing monastic peninsula in northern Greece and one of the most important spiritual centers of Eastern Orthodox Christianity.
It has been a monastic state for over 1000 years and is home to 20 Orthodox monasteries, as well as skytes and hermit cells. Mount Athos is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and operates under a special autonomous status within Greece.
Who is allowed to visit Mount Athos and who is not?
For almost 1500 years only men can visit Mount Athos. Same law not just restricts attending Holy Mountain by women, but also emphasises that Mount Athos is place exclusively for monks to live. However women can travel on the boat along the beach and see the Monasteries from the ship.
Do you need to be Christian / religious to visit Mount Athos?
Even non-Christians visitors are allowed on Mount Athos. Quota for such Is much shorter then for Orthodox Christians, yet you can stay there and have an opportunity to experience a full rhythm of the Monastic life.
What documents and permits are required for the pilgrimage?
For any visitor of the Holy Mountain it is required to get a Diamonitirion (permit/visa). You only need a passport to apply (at least 2 weeks before visit). You will receive it in Ouranoupoli , where most of the pilgrims start their journey from. Ag.oroi team provides our visitors with such an opportunity as well.
What is the dress code for Mount Athos?
We are trying to be as respectful to inhabitants of th Holy Mountain as possible during our journeys. For the time of your visit we recommend wearing : - long-sleeved clothes -closed shoes -avoid bright or disstracting prints -any national symbolics, except greek and byzantine, are also usually not allowed
Accommodation and options for staying overnight
Monasteries are providing accommodation for the visitors all the year long. Usually rooms are simple, shared with guests of your group. In case you require special accommodation solutions there are locations ruled by monks that specify on accommodating people.
How are meals organised?
While staying in the monastery you’ll be allowed to join the trapeza (meal in refectory) with monks of the abbey. Usually 2 times a day, after morning and evening services. Trapeza itself is usually 10-15 minutes long. There is also place to have a proper meal in the Capital (Karyes).
How physically demanding is the pilgrimage?
There are different ways to travel around Mount Athos. Distance between the monasteries is average 2 hours hiking. For some purposes we would recommend you hire a driver, if your plan is to see as much as possible during your trip. Ag.oroi happy to provide you with such an option.
Is it allowed to use mobile phones and take photos or videos?
There is a good internet connection in most places around Mount Athos, our guide will also be able to support you with such if required. Photos and videos are usually restricted and only allowed with a special blessing (permit).
